About the memorial: The memorial is sited on the north west side of St James Park close to Hyde Park Corner. In late May 2013 and a second time in early June it was subject to graffiti attacks. The custodians are swift to remove this. Liam O'Connor designed the memorial, built of Portland stone, which features a bronze 9 foot sculpture of seven aircrew, designed by the sculptor, Philip Jackson to look as though they have just returned from a bombing mission and left their aircraft. Aluminium for a crashed Royal Canadian Air Force planer that had crashed in Belgium was used to build the roof. Sculptor: Philip Jackson ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mayfair & Hyde Park Walk: This architect of this memorial also designed the Commonwealth Gates nearby. The classic design fits the landscape and includes a majestic bronze sculpture of seven Bomber Command aircrew. Above them it is open to the sky so that you, the viewer, always sees them against this backdrop. The roof design includes aluminium parts from a Handley Page Halifax III Bomber which was shot down over Belgium in may 1944 killing 8 crew. In WWII 125,000 volunteered for Bomber Command and nearly half died. To ensure they will always be remembered the names, rank and number of all volunteers together with messages and photos have been put in a time capsule buried in the memorial. The actions of Bomber Command were highly controversial probably contributing to the time in took to create a memorial. A total of 364,514 sorties were flown, 1 million tons of bombs dropped and 8,325 planes lost in action. 19 Victoria crosses were awarded. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Route: Now go back to Constitution Hill and take a route which follows the road eastwards, near the corner of Buckingham Palace look to the left to find the low lying Canadian memorial.. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
