Type: Non freestanding
Description: Board/Plaque/ Tablet
Conflicts:
  • First World War (1914-1918)
  • Battle of Waterloo (1815)
About the memorial: The memorial tablet of Portland stone measuring 4 feet by 3 feet, bears the names, ranks and units of 80 Ewell men. English Heritage state that the railings enclosing the tablet date from around 1816, and that they were erected to celebrate the peace of Waterloo. The memorial therefore also commemorates a war much earlier than the Great War. The tablet was originally attached to the Watch House, as a shrine, being unveiled on 15 April 1917, bearing the names of the first 29 men officially confirmed as dead. More names were added in batches, again in the order of official confirmation of death. The tablet was moved to its present position sometime in the 1960s. The 80 men commemorated are also commemorated on the St Marys churchyard memorial.
