About the memorial: New Zealand Armed Forces: North east corner of Hyde Park. Each stand has different designs reflecting aspects of New Zealand life and culture The memorial comprises 16 bronze "standards" set out on a grassy slope at the east end of the Hyde Park Corner traffic island. Each standard is a cross-shaped metal girder 700 kilograms and set in a concrete foundation, with surrounds of British slate. The dark surfaces of the standards are adorned with, patterns and small sculptures, all symbolic of New Zealand, including fern shapes, a manaia figure, plants and animals from New Zealand, emblems of the New Zealand armed forces, different texts and references to authors and artists from New Zealand. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mayfair & Hyde Park Walk: More than 250,000 New Zealanders served with British Troops in both world wars and of the 124,000 who fought in WWI over half were killed. Their memory is marked by these 16 cross shaped bronze posts which lean forward as if in defiance and could be likened to warriors doing a haka ? They offer a harsh reminder of the awfulness of war. The tops of the crosses are painted white so that from a distance it looks like a field of remembrance. They are placed in two overlapping groups with 10 standards forming a diamond shaped grid, whilst the other 6 arranged behind the main group form the shape of the Southern Constellation. You can walk amongst the arrangement and read the symbols and words which describe various aspects of New Zealand and its way of life. At night the tops of the posts show an illuminated (solar powered) southern cross. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Route: Continue out of the East side of Hyde Park Corner, cross the road to the top of Constitution Hill for the Commonwealth Gates. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
