The memorial is a semi*circular curved wall of grey-green granite slabs from Western Australia The granite stones are inscribed with the names of 23,844 towns in which the Australian soldiers were born, in Australia, the UK and elsewhere. Parts of some town names are picked out in bolder type, creating the names of 47 battles in which Australia was involved in a larger font. In summer months, water runs down over the names, intended to evoke "memories of service, suffering and sacrifice. Four blocks bear the crest of Australia and the insignia of the three branches of the Australian armed services, and three other blocks bear dedicatory inscriptions: "Whatever burden you are to carry we also will shoulder that burden (Robert Menzies, Prime Minister -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mayfair & Hyde Park Walk: Over 1,500,000 men & women from Australia served in the two world wars. This monument records the names of the 24,000 towns (in the UK & Europe as well) they came from and the 47 major battles in which they fought. The wall is made from green granite mined in Western Australia and was designed to be washed by water to symbolise refreshing of memories and cleansing the pain of suffering and loss. The complex shape and intricate wordings required the extensive use of computers to manage the thousands of three dimensional component parts (all sourced from Australia) and the positioning of thousands of place names. The designer Peter Tonkin stated “The form reflects the sweep of the Australian landscape, the breadth & generosity of our people, the openness that we believe should characterise our culture”. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Route: Now go diagonally NE via Wellington Arch to find Machine Gun Corps statue.. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
