About the memorial: The memorial is on the south wall. There is also a memorial in the church to men of East Burton and Winfrith Newburgh, which are part of this parish, yet none of the names appear on both memorials. There is also a Book of Remembrance for the WW1 Fallen which includes those from both memorials. The reason for all this is not clear. The wooden memorial, originally from East Burton Chapel, includes names of villagers who served, and thankfully survived the conflict. Also, it records two men who, tragically, were not so lucky. These physical records do not hold all the ‘facts’, and its worthy of note that while four Burt brothers are listed, there were two younger Burt brothers who were not. It is possible that they were still serving when the plaque was made, but their names were not subsequently added. Albert served in the RFA and was wounded early in 1917. William was first in the RGA and later the Machine Gun Corp.
