  • First World War (1914-1918)
About the memorial: The memorial is situated in the centre of the road junction. The area is bounded by a wall, higher on two sides due to the sloping ground. Gravel infills the area with some ground set aside for plants and flowers. The monument itself comprises a four-sided column of Portland stone, standing on a three-stepped base. The column stands seventeen feet tall, and is topped by an allegory, in this case a bronze of ‘Winged Victory’, standing on a globe supported by four fish, which adds a further eight feet. Steps at one side of the column allow for the placing of wreaths. Carved in relief above the steps is a lion beneath a rising sun, with the words from Laurence Binyon's poem 'For the Fallen' incised on a stone panel at the lion’s feet, see inscription. The surnames and initials of the 278 fallen are carved into slate panels on all four sides of the column, and are picked out in gold-coloured paint. The 136 names of the fallen from World War Two are carved into a stone panel which slopes at the rear of the column, plus one name that is on a separate panel on one side of the column.
