About the memorial: This battlefield cross forms a group with six similar crosses. Seats in front of these crosses invite contemplation of the group, now clearly designed by the cathedral authorities to act as a war memorial. (In April 1917 Col Symons was the Assistant Director of Medical Services for the 9th Division. He was killed when walking to an advanced dressing station at St Nicolas. Col Symons had, in 1900, married Dorothy Bennett of Salisbury. Her family lived in Salisbury Cathedral Close.)
