Our Heroic Dead. The Great War 1914-1919

1914Sergeant 5302 Jonathan Bertie CHADDOCK 2nd Scots Guards died of wounds 1st November 1914. He was the son of Jonathan and Ann who in 1911 were living at High Town Post Office, Congleton. Jonathan in 1911was at the Guards Depot, Catherham, Surrey. He is at rest in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, France Private D/2239 Walter CAUDWELL 3rd Dragoon Guards killed in action 6th November 1914. He was born in 1885 at Stanton Derbyshire to Charles and Annie. In 1901 the family were living at High Town, Congleton. He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium 1915 Private 10120 Moses BOON 1st Cheshire Regiment killed in action 16th November 1914. He was born in 1894 in Whitemoor Village to Joseph and Emily Gertrude. In 1911 the family were living at Congleton Edge, near Mossley, Congleton. He was working in the cola mines as a hookerup. Some notes from what remains of his army records. He joined up aged 19 on the 12th June 1913. he was living at Congleton Edge and was a miner. He was injured twice in peace time. On the 13th August 1913 he cut his leg quite sever on barbwire whilst on a running drill (cross country run) he was discharged from hospital on the 1st September 1913 whilst stationed at Chester. The second time was when he was stationed in Londonderry, at Ebrington Barracks, Waterside, Londonderry He was scalded over the face and neck, sever. he was in hospital from the 19th July 1914 to 1st August 1914. No records survive for the World War. He is also commemorated on Holy Trinity Church War Memorial, Congleton Edge and the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium 1916 Private 9389 Robert Arthur BURGESS 8th Royal Fusiliers killed in action 13th April 1916 at Vermelles aged 19 He was the son of Frederick and Harriet of Mossley, Congleton. He enlisted in November 1914. He is commemorated on his parent memorial (kerb stone) in the Holy Trinity Churchyard, Mossley near Congleton, Cheshire and he is at rest in the Vermelles British Cemetery, France Private 28097 William Edward JONES 18th Welsh Regiment killed in action 16th June 1916 aged 19. He was the son of William E dwardand Lucy Beatrice of Congleton Edge near Mossley, Congleton, Cheshire. He is at rest in Maroc British Cemetery, Grenay, France 2nd Lieutenant James Norman SMITH 15th Liverpool Regiment attached to the 9th Cheshire Regiment died 31st July 1916 aged 20. He was the son of Moses and Jane Smith, of Saredon, Mossley, Congleton, Cheshire. Engineering Student (Honours), Manchester University. He is at rest in Becourt Military Cemetery, bercordel-Becourt, Somme, France 2nd Lieutenant Norman Pickslay CLARK 7th attached to the 2nd Royal Munster Fusiliers died 24th August 1916. He was the son of William and Louisa M Clark of 14, Regent Square, Doncaster. he is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial, Somme, France Captain Charles Graham CARSON (M.C.) C Company 13th Essex Regiment died 19th November 1916 aged 22. He was the son of William L and Harriet of Congleton, Cheshire. He is at rest in St Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France 1917 Private 13911 Ernest BIRKINSHAW 22nd Machine Gun Corps, Infantry, formerly 4.5555 Cheshire Regiment killed in action 3rd October 1917 aged 25. He was the son of William Richard (died 1897)and Alice nee Bailey of Boundary Lane, Mossley, Congleton, Cheshire. He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium 1918 Gunner 105229 Reginald BARLOW 17th Battery, 41st Brigade Royal Field Artillery killed in action 1st April 1918. He was born at Congleton Cheshire to William and Amy. In 1911 the family were living at 6, Station Cottages, Congleton. He is at rest in Varennes Military Cemetery, Somme, France Private 31598 John Wilshaw HIGGINBOTTOM 1st East Lancashire Regiment killed in action 9th August 1918 aged 18. He was the son of Henry Noble and Margaret Fanny , High Town, Congleton, Cheshire. He is at rest in Thiennes British Cemetery, France Rifleman 107640 Thomas Beech BARTON 5th Liverpool Regiment died 20th June 1918 aged 18. He was the son of Thomas beech and Kate Elizabeth of Burton Lodge, Gresford. he is at rest in All Saints Churchyard, Gresford, Denbighshire Private 230986 James WINKLE (Military Medal) 10th King's Shropshire Light Infantry, formerly 1848 Cheshire Yeomanry killed in action 2nd September 1918 aged 24. He was the son of Thomas and Rachel Winkle, of Congleton, Cheshire and husband of Martha Winkle, of 'Avondale,' Holyhead Rd., Chirk, Wrexham, Denbighshire. He is at rest in Sailly-Saillisel British Cemetery, Somme, France Private O/1510 Harold BRAMMER Royal Army Ordnance Corps died 3rd October 1918 aged 20. He was the son of George and Emma Brammer, of 143, Canal Road, Congleton. Also served in East Africa. He is at rest Holy Trinity Churchyard, Mossley, near Congleton, Cheshire Captain Arnold Leslie JOHNSON 5th North Staffordshire Regiment died 14th October 1918 aged 27. He was the son of Robert Lewis and Sarah of Henshall Hall, Congleton, Cheshire and brother of George who also fell Gunner 165101 George William JOHNSON 274th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery died 1st November 1918 aged 29. He was the son of Robert Lewis and Sarah of Henshall Hall, Congleton, Cheshire. He is at rest in St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France, and brother of Arnold who also fell. He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium Captain Lindsay Hubert CARSON 10th Essex Regiment died of wounds 31st October 1918 aged 26. He was the son of William Lindsay Carson and Harriet Carson, of Congleton, Cheshire and husband of Olive Mabel Carson, of 'Down View,' Dyke Road, Avenue, Brighton. he is at rest in Maurois Communal Cemetery, Nord France Gunner 92942 George Charles GREEN 8th Fire Command, Royal Garrison Artillery died 20th October 1918 aged 29. He was the son of George and Fredericka Green, of 14, High Street, Congleton and husband of Helena Green, of Dean's Gate Farm, Astbury, Congleton. Some notes from what remains of his army record. He joined up on the30th November 1915 aged 26 years and 5 months, was a butcher by occupation and lived with his wife Helena nee Buckley who he married on the 15th September 1913 at Astbury Church and child at Cloud View, High Town near Congleton At the time of his marriage he was living at Moss Farm, Astbury. He was mobilised on the 30th May 1916 and posted to 2 Depot, R.G.A. He died on Pneumonia at Milton Sidia, 5th Southern General Hospital, Portsmouth. Most of his records are missing which will explain that no movement record was found . He is at rest in St Peter's Churchyard, Congleton, Cheshire Private 200463 Frederick RIDGWAY, C Company 2/6th North Staffordshire Regiment died 21st March 1918 aged 23. he was the son of Harry Broughton Ridgway and Lucy Bella Ridgway, of I, Henleaze Gardens, Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol. Born at Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire. He is commemorated on the Noreuil German Cemetery. Memorial. 1. at Queant Road, Cemetery, Buissy, France 1939-1945 Nurse 515367 Phyllis BAXTER (Phee) Voluntary Aid Detachment, British red Cross Society died in the service of her country 8th May 1943 aged 28 She was the daughter of Tom Harry and Alice nee Howarth She is at rest in Holy Trinity Churchyard, Mossley, near Congleton, Cheshire Aircraftman 1st Class Arthur Reginald DAVIES Royal Air Force (VR) died 19th January 1943 aged 32. He was the son of Cecil and Edith Davies and husband of Kathleen Morna Davies, of Congleton, Cheshire. He is at rest in Yokohama War Cemetery, Japan. Assistant Cook, D/MX 81321 James Leslie FINNEY Royal Navy on H.M.S. Galatea died at sea 15th December 1941 aged 19. He is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon Sergeant 7883403 Roland HILL 1st Gloucestershire Hussars, Royal Armoured Corps died 18th March 1945 aged 36. He was the son of Joseph and Ada of Crewe. In 1911 he was living with his parent at 26, Westminster Street, Crewe. He was born in 1901 at Heywood, Lancashire.and was the was the husband of Gladys M of Mossley, near Congleton, Cheshire. Some notes from has father's army record. His father joined the army as private 18680, Cheshire Regiment on the 27th November 1914 and was discharged Medically unfit for military service on the 30th November 1914. He was aged 26 years and 6 months employed as a clerk. Ee was married on the 11th December 1905 at Heywood Congregational Church to Ada Twelves, spinster, both were living at 116 West Street, Crewe. They had issue five children on e being Roland who was born on the 24th October 1909 at 23, Chadwick Lane, Heywood, Lancashire His birth name was Roland. He is at rest in Crewe Cemetery, Cheshire H HULME (The Congleton War Memorial has George H Hulme) It may be the following. Gunner 4459000 George Harry HULME, 3/2 Maritime Regiment, Royal Artillery died 1st March 1942 aged 23. He was a gunner on Steam Merchant Carperby which was sunk by U-Boat U-558 off the Southeast of Halifax, Nova Scotia He was born in 1919 at Congleton To William and Sarah Ellen nee Whitehurst. He is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire Warrant Officer Pilot 1238969 Donald William JOLLIFFE 16 Squadron Royal Air Force (VR) who was killed on operations over Nijmegen 1st October 1944 aged 22 He was the son of Walter and Ruby nee Howarth of Kinmel bay, Denbighshire. He is commemorated on a separate memorial on the grave of his Aunt Alice and Uncle Tom Harry Baxter. He is at rest in Geel War Cemetery, Antwerp, Belgium Fusilier 3454562 Thomas LILLEY Royal Fusiliers. The City of London Regiment died 2nd July 1944 aged 27. He was the son of Thomas and Hannah of Congleton and was the husband of Jessie also of Congleton. His wife in 1944 was living at 115, Ferrers Road, Tinsley, Sheffield. This address was also given as his residence by his wife. He is at rest in Schoonselhof Cemetery, Antwerp, Belgium Private 2056481 John Henry NADIN, 2nd Sherwood Foresters died 4th August 1940 aged 20. he was the son of Arthur and Sarah Ellen of Holmewood. Derbyshire. He is at rest in All Saints churchyard, Heath, Derbyshire Private 5348659 Jack PATTEN, 10th Royal Berkshire Regiment died 29th February 1944. He was the son of John Joseph and Mary Jane of Mossley, near Congleton, Cheshire. He is at rest in Beach head War cemetery, Anzio, Italy Driver T/14345122 Wilfred SPARE, Royal Army Service Corps. Died 7th October 1944 aged 34 He was the son of Arthur and Minnie who in 1911 were living with their children at 2, Railway Cottages, Junction Road, Leek, Staffordshire. His father died in 1934 at Congleton. He is at rest in Ancona War cemetery, Italy Lance Sergeant 4129767 Leonard VAN ROY, 93rd Anti-Tank Regiment, Royal Artillery. (6th The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders) died 23rd April 1943 aged 23. He was the son of Joseph Louis Richard and May, nee Brown of Congleton, Cheshire. He is at rest in Medlez-El-Bab War Cemetery, Tunisia Private 3390239 Frank WILLIAMSON, 6th Lincolnshire Regiment died 18th September 1943 aged 27. He was the son of John and Mary Williamson, of Congleton, Cheshire and husband of Blanche Williamson, of Congleton. He is at rest in Salerno War Cemetery, Italy
