See the What is a war memorial section of this website for further information. Description from the programme for the unveiling and dedication of the memorial, 10 November 1929: “The Cross of Sacrifice erected by the Imperial War Graves Commission in St Jude’s Cemetery, Englefield Green to the memory of the 62 Members of His Majesty’s Forces who died in the service of their King and Country during the Great War, and whose bodies are interred in the Cemetery, is 14 ft 6 ins in height, is constructed of Portland stone, and is erected immediately on the right, inside the main Entrance Gates. The Drum of the Cross bears the following inscription: THIS CROSS OF SACRIFICE IS ONE IN DESIGN AND INTENTION WITH THOSE WHICH HAVE BEEN SET UP IN FRANCE AND BELGIUM AND OTHER PLACES THROUGHOUT THE WORLD, WHERE OUR DEAD OF THE GREAT WAR ARE LAID TO REST. ‘THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE.’ The Cross faces south and is placed between two flower beds, set in a hedged recess.
