About the memorial: Chilmark stone. 5 octagonal steps up to square plinth with spurs. Shaft starts with square section, becoming octagonal with capital surmounted by octagonal cross. The steps carry the names of men lost in WW!, WW2 and Afghanistan. Around 4 stone pillars with rounded tops originally inscribed with the names of those who survived and returned from WW1. All on island in road T-junction.

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.

Before applying for a grant you should read the advice available on War Memorials Trust`s website. The What we can and cannot fund helpsheet explains what types of work the charity can fund.

If you believe your project is eligible for a grant you should complete the Pre-application enquiry form. You will need to be registered and logged in to complete this.

The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.

You can save your Pre-application enquiry form as you go along. Once submitted War Memorials Trust will respond.

Their name liveth for evermore //Men of Over Wallop fallen in the War // A. D 1914 - 1919 // A. D. 1939 - 1945 // These inscriptions are on various faces of the plinth. The steps carry the names of the dead, as below.

First World war: 2nd Lt N M Owen, AB W Grace RN, Cpl L H Bulpitt, Cpl C F Down, Cpl G Noyce, Drumr W Baigent, Pte A Baigent, Pte W Barrett, Pte T Baverstock, Pte A Cannons, Pte F Chubb, Pter C W Grist, Pte T Harman, Pte A Miles, Pte P Minault CM, Pte A J Pepler, Drumr W scott, Pte W Wells and Lt A H Fry. The latter was niot a resident of Over wallop, but his family were and requested that the name be added in the 1960s. Second World War: J Shadwell, A Shears, T Simpson, V Forrest, R Grant, L Lush, E Matthews. Afghanistan: L/Cpl P Upton
