About the memorial: A large, golden arched, ornate ruby red, mottled marble alcove with Latin dedication within the coloured arch, having a white marble Pieta resting on a black, bronze sarcophagus at its centre. Above the sculpture is a large bronze relief (?) of furled flags, a wreath with crossed guns and at its centre arms of Great Britain and supported by a column on either side. Four long white marble tablets record the names of 244 who died on the back and sides of the alcove..
