About the memorial: The Smithfield War Memorial was originally dedicated on the 22nd July 1921 by Lord Mayor of London, James Roll to those people associated with the Markets who died during World War 1. 3 beds at nearby Bart’s Hospital were also endowed. Above are figures of 'Fame' and 'Victory' holding laurel wreaths and the Arms of the City of London are also at the top. On the base is the Coat of Arms of the Worshipful Company of Butchers. The War Memorial now commemorates the memory of all men, women and children of Smithfield who have lost their lives in conflict since the Great War. It now contains an additional block of red granite and a bronze plaque. The war memorial was re-dedicated on 15 June 2005 by HRH The Princess Royal who was Master Butcher at the time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- City of London West Walk: This granite and bronze memorial was funded by the Butchers of Smithfield meat market to remember colleagues who died in WWI.
