The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.

Ingleton War MemorialMain Street, Yorkshire In memory of the 41 Men of this parish who gave up their lives for their Country and Freedom in the war 1914 - 1919 The Plaque In memory of the Men of Ingleton who fell in the two World Wars 1914 - 1918 ASKEW Ernest. Private 2006, 6th West Riding Regiment died 23rd July 1915. He was the son of George and Margaret of Skipton, Yorkshire He is commemorated on the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, West Vlaanderen Belgium Some notes from what remains of his Army record. He joined up on the 26th April 1913 aged 22 years and 3 months at Skipton, Yorkshire. He was born in Ingleton but was living at 40 Westmorland Street, Skipton and working as a weaver. On the 28th April 1913 he was at Aberystwyth Army Training camp doing his annual training with the 6th Battalion. On the outbreak of war he was enlisted into the 6th battalion. On the 14th April 1915 he embarked from Folkstone on S.S. Onward. to join his unit in France. The 20th July 1915 he received shrapnel wounds to the head in the field (theatre of war not given) and died of his wounds at 10th Casualty Clearing Station. Hazebrouck, France His next of kin was his sister Miss Ethel Askew born at Ingleton but was residing at Raiksfield, Skipton, Yorkshire when she received her brothers effects and medals. BOLTON William Henry, Private 2501, 6th West Riding Regiment died 30th July 1915. He is at rest in Ferme-Oliver Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Some notes from what remains of his Army Record. He joined on the 4th September 1914. He lived at 6, Beach Terrace, Ingleton with his parents Robert and Alice formerly of 19, Gisburn Street, Barnoldswick, Yorkshire. In 1911 he was working as a cotton weaver. His father was his next of kin and in 1916 when he received his late sons effects he was living at 16, Ramsbottom Lane, Ramsbottom, Yorkshire. On the 14th April 1915 he embarked from Folkstone on S.S. Onward. to join his unit in France. On the 30th July 1915 he received a sun shot wound to his leg and treated at a Field Ambulance at Elverdinge, Belgium where he died. He was buried at Ypres the same day. BRADFORD Jack Colclough, Private 20301, 9th West Riding Regiment died 25th April 1917 aged 24. He was the husband of Millicent of 50, (Model)New Village, Ingleton, Yorkshire . Native of Little Leigh, Cheshire. and was the son of James and Sarah Ann, nee Colclough of Church Lane, Weaverham, Cheshire He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France. Some notes from what remains of his Army record. He joined at Halifax on the 4th May 1916 aged 23 years and 7 months. He lived at 50, Model Village, Ingleton and worked as a surface worker at the coal mine. His next of kin was given as his sister Mrs Bertha Colclough Plumney of 36 Station Road, Biddulph, Congleton, Cheshire but when he married Millicent nee Floyd on the 17th April 1916 at Huncoat near Burnley she was his next of kin. He was in France from the 2nd December 1916 and reported missing presumed killed on the 25th April 1917 BROOKES Ronald Baines, 2nd Lieutenant, 55th Squadron Royal Flying Corps died 13th March 1918 aged 22. He was the son of John of The square, Ingleton. He is buried at Neuf-Brisach Communal Cemetery Extension, Haut-Rhin, France CLAPHAM Joseph Robert, Private 11542, 9th West Riding Regiment killed in action 7th July 1916 aged 33. He was the son of William and Betsy Ann of the Craven Heifer Inn, Ingleton. He is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial, Somme, France. The only notes from his Army record that has survived is four pages that show he joined up on the 2 January 1909 aged 26 years and 9 months. He was serving with the 6th West Riding Regiment as Private 940. He has previously served with the 3rd Volunteer Battalion West Riding Regiment. In 1909 he was living with his parents at Craven heifer, Ingleton and was employed as a labourer. He was discharged from the army on the 2nd February 1911, termination of his engagement. No records for the great war engagement. COULSON Preston, Private 265392, 1/6th West Riding Regiment died of wounds 4th May 1918 aged 26. He was the son of Kate Coulson (now Greenwood), of 16, Langdale Road, Barnsley, and the late William Coulson. Native of Longtown, He is at rest in Esquelbecq Military Cemetery, Nord France CREED Beaufort Henry , Able Seaman, R/4944, Drake Battalion, Royal Naval Division Royal Naval (VR) He was born on the 7th May 1892 at Armley Leed and died from disease 24th December 1918. He was the son of William Henry and Emily Ellin. In 1911 his mother was a widow and living at 122, Simpson Street, Armley, Yorkshire. He was the husband of Ruby of 3, Railway View, Ingleton. He is at rest in Hamburg Cemetery, Germany DAWSON Edward Carr, Private 202174, 1/4th Northumberland Fusiliers died 26th October 1917 aged 24. He was the son of Edward and Elizabeth of Bleak Bank Clapham, Lancaster and in 1901 were living at Cold Cotes, Ingleton. He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium. FLETCHER Joseph, 2nd Corporal 129633, 1st Special Brigade, Royal Engineers. killed in action 23rd March 1918 aged 28. He was the son of James and Jane Ann of 6, Laburnum Cottages, Ingleton. He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Some notes from what remains of his Army record. He enlisted on the 24th January 1916 aged 22 years and 11 months and was working as a chauffeur . He served in France from the 15th March 1916 to 5th July 1917 during which period he was gassed on the 28th June 1916. He was treated at 44 casualty Clearing Station same day and on the 5th July 1916 was transferred to England . He rejoined his unit from the depot on the 14th October 1916 to 23rd March 1918. he was promoted to Lance Corporal on the 14th July 1917 then 2nd Corporal (full corporal) on the 14th July 1917. 23rd March 1918, killed in action FLETCHER Percy, Private 50508, 12th King's Liverpool Regiment, formerly 41840, Lancashire Regiment, killed in action 17th September 1917. He was married to Emma nee Gough of 200, Rochdale Road, Royton, Lancashire. He was the son of James and Jane Ann of 6, Laburnum Cottages, Ingleton. He is at rest in Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium GRANT Charles, Steward on S.S. Membland (West Hartlepool) died at sea 15th February 1915 aged 46. he was the on of the late Mr. and Mrs. Grant and husband of Catherine Grant (nee Campbell) of Hollin Tree Cottage, Ingleton, Yorks. Born at Nairn. He is commemorated on theTower Hill Memorial, London. HEAPS Thomas, (Military Medal) Sergeant 43538, 3rd Divison Trench Mortar Battery, Canadian Field Artillery. He was born on the 19th September 1894 and died 30th March 1918. He was the son of Robert and Mary of Upper Gate Ingleton and worked granite quarry. He is at rest in La Targette British Cemetery, Neuville-St. Vaast, Pas de Calais, France HILTON A (Unable to find the correct record listed with the CWGC) HODGSON William Atkinson, Private 1970, 1/6th West Riding Regiment died of wounds 5th July 1916 aged 19. He was the son of Christopher and Annie of 3, Railway Drive, Ingleton. He is at rest in Puchevillers British Cemetery, Somme, France. Some note from what remains of his Army record. He joined up on the 7th March 1915 aged 17 and employed as a Clerk. He was at the time of enlistment living at 12 Laburnum Cottages, Ingleton. His parents lived at 3 Railway View, Upper Gate, Ingleton. He embarked from Southampton on S.S. Onward on the 4th April 1915 for France. On the 29th December 1915 he was admitted to 4th Stationary hospital at St Omer with Pyrexia. 4th January 1916 he was fit for war service and he rejoined his regiment in the field. The 5th July 1916 he was severely wounded with multiple shrapnel wounds to his complete back. He was treated at 2nd West Riding Field Ambulance and he died of his wounds in 44 Casualty Clearing Station the same day KETTLEWELL James Lance Corporal 14555, 10th West Riding Regiment killed in action 28th July 1916 aged 24. He was the son of Thomas and Dorothy Hully Kettlewell of Thornton Cottage, Burton on Lonsdale, near Ingleton, Yorkshire. He was native of Ingleton. He is at rest in Gordon Dump Cemetery, Ovillers-La-Boisselle, Somme, France. KIRK Gerald Lieutenant, 1/5th Royal Lancaster Regiment died of wounds in Belgium. on the 24th April 1915 at the battle of Poperinge. He was the son of Alfred Samuel and Isabella Ann, formerly Greenwood of Greenwood Leigh Ingleton and husband of Sarah Jane of Hazel Mount, Carnforth. He is at rest in Poperinghe Old Military Cemetery, West Vlaanderen, Belgium He was born 14th July 1883, played football for Bradford City and Leeds United. MARKLEW William Brown, Private 20938, 8th Royal Lancaster Regiment died 24th July 1916 aged 24. He was the son of Abel Markham and Mary of Oakroyd, Ingleton. He is at rest in Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-L'Abbe, Somme, France. His brother Charles Able also fought in the Great War as Gunner 20985, Machine Gun Corps. Joined up on the 3rd October 1915 and discharged to Class Z (Army Reserve) 5th March 1919 MATHAMS W (Only one 'Mathams' listed with the CWGC and that is Albert. Varients aslo looked at) McLAUGHLIN Alfred, Private 205640, 5th West Riding Regiment killed in action 25th August 1918 aged 22. he was the son of Harry and Isabel of bank Top, Ingleton. Native of Cleator Moor, Cumberland. He is at rest in Gomiecourt South Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France METCALFE James John William T, Sergeant 2329, C Coy, 1/6th West Riding Regiment died 4th September 1916 aged 23. He was the son of Sylvester and Rosanna of Ingleton. He is at rest in Forceville Communal Cemetery and Extension, Somme, France. METCALFE William Miles, Private 38853, 2/4th Royal Berkshire Regiment died 31st March 1918 aged 19. He was the son of John and Bessie Jane of Weatheroak Road, Ingleton. He is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France. NEWSHOLME Christopher James, Private 12136, Army Pay Corps, formerly 3796, West Riding Regiment, died in England 8th January 1918 aged 26. He was the son of Allan and Mary of Ingleton. He is at rest in Ingleton Cemetery, Yorkshire NOBLE Anthony, Rifleman 5151, 2nd King's Royal Rifle Corps died 31st May 1915 aged 31. He was the son of Francis and the late John Noble and husband of Eleanor Tomlinson (formerly Noble), of Beech Terrace, Ingleton. Born Bampton, Penrith. He is at rest in Lillers Communal Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. Some notes from what remains of his army record. He enlisted on the 11th November 1902 as Private 3027 Border Regiment. The 23rd September 1903 he was Rifleman 5151 and was stationed in Cork with the 3rd Kings Royal Rifle Corps and on the 24th November 1905 at Aldershot posted to 2nd K.R.R.C as Rifleman 5151. He was aged 19 years and 7 months on enlistment and gave his home address Beach Terrace, Ingleton and was working as a farm labourer. He was stationed at Bermuda from the 16th March 1904 to 24th October 1905. 9th December 1905 he married Eleanor Taylor at the parish church of Kirkby Thore, Yorkshire. He was posted to France and died of wounds on the 31st May 1915. REDHEAD Lawrence Edward, Private 62206, 15/17th West Yorkshire Regiment killed in action 12th April 1918 aged 19. He was the son of James Waterhouse and Grace of 5, Park View, Ingleton. He is at rest in Le Grand Beaumart British Cemetery, Steenwerck, Nord France. ROBINSON Edward, Private 306878, 2/7th West Riding Regiment died 3rd May 1917 aged 20. He was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Ann of 2, Storrs Cottages, Ingleton. He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France ROBINSON John William, Private 2500 1/6th West Riding Regiment killed in action 3rd September 1916 aged 24. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. Some notes from what remains of his Army record. He enlisted aged 23 years and 11 months on the 2nd September 1914 and was a miner. His mother Mrs Sarah Annie Waldren of Uppergate, Ingleton was his next of kin. His father was called Charles and in 1901 the family were living at Beach Terrace, Ingleton ROBINSON Robert, Private 66570, 1/6th Northumberland Fusiliers died 11th April 1918 aged 19. He was the son of Mr and Mrs T Robinson of 2, Storrs Cottages, Ingleton. He is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Hainaut, Belgium ROUTLEDGE Herbert Douglas, Private P/8758, Military Police Corps, died 2nd January 1919 aged 31. He was the son of William James and Jane of Hollin Treet, Ingleton. He is at rest in Ingleton Cemetery, Yorkshire. Some notes from remains of his Army record when he was with the West Riding Regiment. He was a reservist from the 31st October 1903 to the 10th April 1912. He was born at Penrith, and enlisted at York the 31st October 1903 aged 18 years and was employed as a clerk and was serving as Private 7648, 3rd West Riding Regiment. He gave his father William og Leigtham Terrace, Ingleton his next of kin. When the war broke out he was mobilised at halifax on the 5th August 1914 and for some reason he was discharged having been found no longer physically fit for war service. His total service was 10 years and278 days. ROUTLEDGE Thomas Kirkbride, Trooper 230093, C Squadron 1/1st Dorset Yeomanry died 9th June 1918 aged 25. He was the son of William James and Jane of Hollin Treet, Ingleton. (Wills and Probate on Ancestry.co.uk He was living at The Mews, Parr Street, Parkstone, Dorsetshire (where hie worked as a groom) He was killed in action at Palestine. He effects were left to his brother Private William James. He is at rest in Jerusalem War Cemetery, Israel and Palestine. SAUL James, Private 31286, 8th East Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 29102, Yorkshire Regiment, killed in action 9th April 1917 aged 23. He was the son of Thomas and Grace Annie of Clarrich Terrace, Ingleton. He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France SCHOFIELD J (Unable to find the correct record listed with the CWGC) SCHOLEY George Arnold, Sergeant 305701, 1/8th West Yorkshire Regiment died of wounds 4th August 1917 aged 26.. He was the son of George and Harriet E who in 1901 were living in Maltby Village. 1911 at The Steel Barnley Moor Road, Maltby, Yorkshire, employed as a bricklayesr labourer He is at rest in Mont Huon Military Cemetery, le Treport, Seine Maritime, France SHERWIN Alfred, Private 267050, 2/6th West Riding Regiment killed in action 3rd May 1917 aged 28. He was the son of Joseph and Mary Ann nee Sheerin of Upper Gate, Ingleton. He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France SLINGER Vincent, Private 265583, 1/6th West Riding Regiment died 22nd November 1918 aged 29. He was the son of John and Ann of Albion House, Ingleton. He is at rest in Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille, Pas de Calais, France. Some notes from what remains of his Army record. he enlisted 21st April 1904 at Ingleton as Private 1343, 6th West Riding Regiment he was previously serving with the 3rd Volunteer Battalion, West Riding Regiment. He worked as a coachman for the Ingleton Hotel, Ingleton. His full term of engagement was from the 21st April 1904 to 20th April 1914. On the 21st April 1909 he continued his engagement as private 1143 now aged 23 There are no record for the period of the great war. His medal card show a different army number as 2496 and served in France from 14th April 1915. TOMLINSON Syril, Private 1690, 1/6th West Riding Regiment died 17th December 1915 aged 21. He was the son of Edward and Elizabeth Ann of 8, Laburnum Cottages, Ingleton. He is at rest in Talana Farm Cemetery, West Vlaanderen, Belgium. Some notes from what remains of his Army record. He enlisted on the 15th October 1911. He was living with his parents and siblings at Lemon Cottage, Ingleton and was an apprentice boot maker to Mr J Berry. His Master (Mr Berry) did not object to him enlisting into the army. He had previously served with the 6th West Riding Cadet Battalion. He was killed in action on the 17th December 1915 WADESON John Wright, private 242643, 1/5th West Riding Regiment killed in action 8th October 1917 aged 22. he was the son of James Henry and Harriet of Gilly Gate, Pontefract, Yorkshire. He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, West Vlaanderen, Belgium WALLING Ernest, M C, Twice Mentioned in Despatches. Croix de Guerre (France). Major, 1/7th West Yorkshire Regiment . He was killed in action on the 25th April 1918 aged 32. He was the son of George and Margaret Ann of Ferncliffe, Ingleton. He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium WALKER Robert Edward, Sergeant 265035, 2/6th West Riding Regiment killed in action 3rd May 1917. He was the husband of Isabel Halliwell (formerly Walker), of The Three Horse Shoes, Ingleton, Yorkshire. he is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France WIGNAL William Henry, Gunner 114240, 255th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery died 1st February 1917. He was the son of John and Annie of the Mason's Arms, Ingleton. In 1911 he was living with his wife and son at 15, Kensington Road, Lancaster and was working as a commercial traveller. He was a native of Ingleton and he is at rest in Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, Nord France. Some notes from what remains of his Army record. He enlisted on the 9th August 1916 aged 40 and gave his home address as 44, Coulston Road, Lancaster and occupation as provision traveller. On the 27th October 1902 he married Margaret Amy Wrathall at Thornton in Lonsdale, Yorkshire. He embarked Southampton on the 18th January 1917 arriving at Le Havre on the 19th. The 1st February 1917 he was admitted to 113 Field Ambulance suffering from Meningitis (Pneumococcal) and died the same day. He left a wife and two children. William John born 4th February 1910 and Fran born 15th July 1911 and they were living at 20, Hastings Road, Lancaster. WILSON William Henry Winder, Private 9097, 2nd Royal Lancaster Regiment died 17th February 1915 aged 26. He was the son of George and Barbara Wilson, of Whitton Cottage, Ingleton, Yorks. Native of Colton, Ulverston, Lancs. He is at rest in Ypres Town Cemetery Extension, Belgium. WOODHOUSE John Laurence William killed in action, close to Guillemont during the Battle of the Somme, on July 30th, 1916, in France. As a member of the 89th Company, The Machine Gun Corps, he was supporting The King's (Liverpool Regiment) in their offensive on enemy lines. Son of Lawrence Woodhouse, born 1865 in Ravenstonedale, a train guard at Tebay, who died in 1900, and Margaret née Swainbank, born 1870 in Dent. Lance Corporal Woodhouse was born in Tebay, Westmorland in January 1895. He enlisted in The Kings Own Royal Lancs Regiment at Lancaster, and later transferred to The Machine Gun Corps, 89th Company, 30th Div. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, and on the window of remembrance at Tebay Church. He was a train fireman on the Ingleton passenger branch line prior to enlistment, and married Margaret Saul, born 1897, in Ingleton in 1914. His spouse was living at Throstle Hall, Dent at the time of her husband's death. 1939 - 1945 BERESFORD Ernest Francis, Private 2824324, 2nd Seaforth Highlanders, died 2nd November 1942. He was the son of Robert and Mary of Hill Inn, Chapel-le-dale near Ingleton. He is commemorated on the Alamein Memorial, Egypt CHIPPENDALE George, 2nd Lieutenant, 656 General Construction Company, Royal Engineers died 29th May 1940 aged 30 at sea. He was the son of Thomas and Sarah Alice Chippendale; husband of Kathleen Chippendale, of Beverley, Yorkshire., formerly of Hillside Old Pool Bank Pool-in-Wharfedale. A.M.I.Mun.C.E.. He is commemorated on the Dunkirk Memorial, Nord France HOWSON James Storey, Aircraftman 2nd Class 1355986, Royal Air Force (VR) died in England 26th October 1940 aged 29. He was the son of James and Hannah Mary of Ingleton, formerly of 72, Liverpool Road, Skelmersdale, Ormskirk, Lancashire. He is at rest in Ingleton Cemetery HORNE Wilfred, Corporal 7915674, Armoured Assault Regiment, Royal Armoured Corps died 14th September 1944 aged 31. He was the son of George and Ester Horn, of Ingleton, Lancashire; husband of Dorothy Horn, of Ingleton. He is at rest in Gradara War Cemetery, Italy (Surname is Horn) HUNT William Grieves, Private 3598093, 4th Border Regiment died 6th June 1940 aged 39. he was the son of Edward and Margaret Hunt and husband of Mary of Ingleton. He is at rest in Incheville Communal Cemetery, Seine-Maritime, France. REDHEAD Charles Harold, Sergeant 3597062, 1st West Yorkshire Regiment died 12th March 1944 in Burma aged 28. He was the son of Hubert and Isabel Redhead; husband of Isabel Redhead, of Bentham, Lancashire. He is commemorated on the Rangoon Memorial, Burma TOMLINSON Stanley, Signalman 2590638, 1st Corps of signals, Royal Corps of Signals died 25th August 1944 aged 34. He was the son ofand Edward and Elizabeth Ann of 8, Laburnum Cottages, Ingleton and brother of Syril. He was the husband of Jessie Margaret of Ingleton.
