One name on this memorial is of special interest in connection with the Yorkshire Regiment in the First World War (the Green Howards), - Lieut Col Ralph Edward Dawson Kent.On the opening day of the Battle of the Somme, with the 7th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment at Fricourt, Major (as then) Kent disregarded orders and lead his Company into battle some hours ahead of the agreed time. Considerable slaughter followed. Extraordinarily, Major Kent was not charged over this incident. After recovering from his wounds he transferred to the 4th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment, and was killed fighting with them on 27 May 1918.
