Location: External
Setting: Roadside
Description: Market cross
Materials:
  • Metal Brass
  • Stone Stone (any)
Lettering: Inscribed on a plaque

  • First World War (1914-1918)
  • Second World War (1939-1945)
About the memorial: Large cross sat on a large stone plinth, with WW1 brass plates around the base of the cross and WW2 on a tablet below it. According to local antiquarian and author Cecil Torr, the memorial is an adaptation of an old town cross. It had previously been moved, restored and set on a new base, but medieval mouldings were chiselled away to make room for the metal plaques around the base. Torr did not approve and described the result as like a kitchen fender. See "Small Talk at Wreyland", vol 3, p10, Cecil Torr, Cambridge U.P. 1923. Torr was squire of the nearby hamlet of Wreyland (6 houses)
