About the memorial: Captain Hood died near the Pointe du Raz (Brittany). He had been born in Mosterton (Dorset) and his naval career included accompanying James Cook on his second voyage of exploration and commanding ships in the American Revolutionary War. His cousin was the well-known Admiral Sir Samuel Hood. The memorial represents one side of a family tomb. which is elaborately carved. Classical dentilated Doric entablature with triglyphs and carved flowers on the frieze (similar to sarcophagus of Cornelius Lucius Scipio Barbatus).

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.

If you believe your project is eligible for a grant you should complete the Pre-application enquiry form. You will need to be registered and logged in to complete this.

The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.

Mars of 74 guns on the night of the 21st April 1789) lashing his ship to the enemy, fought and conquered, after a desperate action, the French ship L'Hercule of equal force and in the moment of victory fell gloriously.
