About the memorial: Bronze figure surmounts square Portland stone base. Green marble facing with names inscribed on it on base Figure is of Winged Victory, half draped, as she carries 4 palm leaves and wears laurel wreath on her head. Shield, crown, furled flags above inscribed plaque. By Newbury Abbot Trent RBS (Sculptor) Unveiled 30 April 1922 by Sir James Roll Now also includes a marine from the Afghanistan conflict. The memorial has been cleaned and the names have been replaced, in excellent condition, with hard standing around the base and wooden fencing in keeping with the gardens around

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.

Before applying for a grant you should read the advice available on War Memorials Trust`s website. The What we can and cannot fund helpsheet explains what types of work the charity can fund.

If you believe your project is eligible for a grant you should complete the Pre-application enquiry form. You will need to be registered and logged in to complete this.

The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.

You can save your Pre-application enquiry form as you go along. Once submitted War Memorials Trust will respond.

Men of Wanstead whom their neighbours hereby commemorate were numbered amongst those who in the Great War, at the call of King and country, left all that was dear to them, endured hardship, facet danger, and finally passed out of the sight of man by the path of duty and self-sacrifice, giving up their own lives that others might live in freedom. Let those who come after see to it that their sacrifice was not in vain
