About the memorial: Celtic cross set on a square shaft, plinth, and four steps. The plinth has four arched faces with pillars and tablets for the names. The whole is set on a gravel surround in a garden. It is in the Churchyard near Queen's Square.

He was born in Bicester Oxfordshire and enlisted at Kirkby Lonsdale. He was the son of George Henry and Jane of Bicester, Oxfordshiere. In 1911 he was living at Underley Gardens, Kirkby Lonsdale and was employed as a gardener He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme France Lance Corporal 14905 Sidney Herbert BLOWS, 7th Border Regiment killed in action 16th December 1915 aged 21. Frank PEARSON, 49th Training Reserve Battalion, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment died 5th February 1918 aged 47 at Military Hospital Prees Heath Shropshire. He lived at Brant How, Kirkby Lonsdale. His effect of £36433 8s 1d went to Susanna Mary Pearson, his widow. He was the son of Francis Fenwick Pearson. He was born at Arkholme, Lancs and is at rest in St Mary's churchyard, Kirkby Lonsdale Honourable Artillery Company Sergeant 4246 Wilfred Henry JACKSON 2nd Honourable Artillery Company died 15th May 1917 aged 21. He was the son of John Warbrick Smith and Ruth of 4, Faribank, Kirkby Lonsdale. A civil servant. He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France. Some notes from what remains of his army record. He joined up on the 23rd August 1915 and was posted to the Army reserve. He embarked Southampton on the 1st October 1916 and disembarked at Le Havre on the 3rd. He was appointed the rank of Sergeant on the 7th March 1917 Machine Gun Corps Private 74716, John William BLAMIRE, 3rd Divisonal Battalion, Machine Gun Corps died 18th March 1919 aged 34. He was the son of William and Margaret Agnes nee Burns of Kirkby Lonsdale. In 1911 he was living at the Stables, Petty Pool, Land Sandwig, Cheshire as a groom. He is commemorated on the Addenda Panel at the United Kingdom 1914-1918 Memorial, Brookwood, Surrey. ( This casualty has recently been accepted for commemoration by the Commission. However, it will not be possible to add his name to this Memorial immediately. Please contact the Commission before planning a visit, for more information). Some notes from what remains of his Army Record. He joined up on the 19th August 1914 at Eaton Park aged 30 years and 2 months, working as a groom. He was the son of William Henry and Margaret Agnes of Low Bridge, Carnforth, Westmorland and then of Rose Cottage, Casterton, near Kirkby Lonsdale. He served in Egypt from the 3rd March 1916 to 8th March 1919. On the 2nd December 1918 whilst clipping a mule he was kicked in the face and received a sever fracture to his nose. On the 9th March was invalided to England and that is when he went missing. (See document relating to this period) His death has been excepted on the 18th March 1919. In brief. He was logged onto the ship but in England he was not recorded as having arrived. Royal Engineers Sapper 155643 William DAWSON 233rd Field Coy, Royal Engineers died of wounds 11th April 1917 aged 30. He was born at Kirkby Lonsdale and was the son of James and Alice of 12 Mitchelgate, Kirkby Lonsdale. He is at rest in Dickebusch New Military Cemetery, West Vlaanderen, Belgium London Irish Rifles Sergeant 590401 Alexander KIRKHAM 18th London Irish Rifles , formerly Private 1777 (same Regt) killed in action 7th April 1917. He was the son of Thomas and Jane Ann of 49, Seal Street, Liverpool. Born at Kirkby Londsale and he is at rest in Railway Cutting Cemetery, Larch Wood, West Vlaanderen, Belgium (Memorial has Private) Royal Marine Light Infantry Private PO/17920 John Burrow DAWSON Royal Marine Light Infantry on H.M.S. Hampshire Born 23rd April 1897 and died 5th June 1916 aged 19. He was the son of Hannah Read (formerly Dawson), of Old Manor House, Kirkby Lonsdale, Westmorland, and the late Joseph Dawson. He is at rest in Lyness Royal Naval Cemetery, Isle of Hoy, Orkney. Manchester Regiment Sergeant 142 William TAYLFORTH 1/6th Manchester Regiment killed in action 31st May 1915 aged 32. He was the son of William and Marion of Slapestones, Kirkby Lonsdale. In 1911 he was living at 5, The Polygon, Lower Broughton, Manchester and was and Elementary School teacher. His parents died in 1947 with in 17 days of each other still at Slapestones He is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey and Gallipoli Durham Light Infantry Private 43053 James HAYES 14th Durham Light Infantry formerly 3223 Derbyshire Yeomanry died of wounds died 31st March 1917 aged 30. He was the son of Samuel and Elizabeth of Sutton-on-Trent, Newark, Nottinghamshire. Born at Sutton on Trent enlisted at Kirkby Lonsdale and is at rest in Bethune Town Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France Royal Welsh Fusiliers Company Sergeant Major 9288, Frederick George PRICE (Mentioned in Despatches) Royal Welsh Fusiliers 12th January 1916 Born at Hanwood, Salop. He is at rest in Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta. Some notes from what remains of his army record. He joined up on the 4th November 1907 and served six and half years with the colours. Called up on the outbreak of war on the 4th August 1914. He was born on the 17th February 1880 at Shrewsbury to Edwin and Emily nee Kemsley and was the husband of Annie nee Fraser who he married on the 1st June 1914 at Harrington, Northamptonshire. He died on the 12th January 1916 on board H.M Hospital Ship, Devanah from wounds received in action on the Peninsula. Rifle Brigade Private 2430 John WILDMAN, 3rd Rifle Brigade died 18th August 1916. He was the son of Thomas and Jane who in 1891 were living at 4 Market Street, Kirkby Lonsdale. He is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial, Somme, France. Some notes from what remains of his army record. He joined up at Winchester 24th October 1907 into the Rifle Brigade aged 18 years and was a shop assistant. Prior to the war he served in Tipperary with the 3rd Battalion from the 3rd July 1910 and India from the 5th January 1913. On the 28th September 1915 he was with the 3rd Battalion and was posted to the front on the 1st October 1915. His mother received his medals and she was living at 106, North End Avenue, Portsmouth. South African Infantry Lance Corporal 9649 William Henry MAUDSLEY, 3rd Regiment, South Africian Infantry died 15th December 1916 aged 40. He was the son of John and Eleanor of Beckhead, Kirkby Lonsdale. He is at rest in Habarcq Communal Cemetery Extension, Pas de Calais, France South African Field Ambulance Sergeant Leonard Robinson (No record for a Leonard Robinson listed with the CWGC for the above unit) It may be the following person. Corporal 201742, Leonard John ROBINSON, C Coy, 1st Border Regiment died 5th July 1917 aged 24. He was the son of Robert and Barbara Robinson, of Penrith and husband of Sarah Robinson, of Church Cottage, Casterton, Kirkby Lonsdale, Carnforth. He is at rest in Mendinghem Military Cemetery, West Vlaanderen, Belgium Some notes from what remains of his Army record. he joined up on the 12th August 1915 aged 21 years. He gave his mother, Barbara of The Vicarage, Arnside, Westmorland and his occupation was a groom. He embarked from Folkstone on the 3rd March 1917 and disembarked at Boulogne the same day and arrived at the Infantry Base depot on the 4th. The 3rd July 1917 he was received gun shot wounds at the front and died of his wounds on the 5th July at 12th casualty Clearing Station. In his records is a letter from his wife to the army requesting information about her husbands death. She states that she received official information that her husband died of wounds. She goes on to say that she received a letter from France informing her that he was not seriously wounded when taken away and was bright and cheerful on the night of the 3rd. The Army Chaplin writes to her from 12th Casualty Clearing Station saying he was admitted their at 4.10pm on the 4th unconscious and died at 7pm. Canadian Infantry Private A/36150 John William RICHARDSON 4th Canadian Infantry died 8th October 1916 aged 34. He was the son of John Irving and Annie of Main Street Kirkby Lonsdale In 1911 his widowed mother was now living at 35 regent Street, Lancaster. He is at rest in Adanac Military Cemetery, Miraumont, Somme, France 1939-1945 Fusilier 5952471 Daniel ANDERSON, 9th Royal Fusiliers killed in action 14th September 1944 aged 25. He was the son of George Finlay and Margaret of Kirkby Lonsdale. He is commemorated on his parents memorial in St Mary's churchyard, Kirkby Lonsdale and he is at rest in Coriano Ridge War Cemetery, Italy Leading Aircraftman 528459 John Charles BAGLEY, 206 squadron, Royal Air Force died 6th December 1939 aged 22. He was the son of John William and Mary Ann of Leck, Lancashire Private 218831 Ernest William COBB, 2nd Airborne Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment died 25th September 1944 aged 27. Native of Kendale he was the son of Ernest and Mary A nee Lowe and husband of Iris M, nee Jones (who he married in 1841 in Barrow-in-Furness) of Cricklewood, Middlesex. He is at rest in Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery, Gelderland, Netherlands. Sapper 2019400 Arthur Wilson DALE, Royal Engineers died 12th September 1940 aged 27. He was the son of Joseph Henry and Margaret of Kirkby Lonsdale. He is at rest in St Mary's churchyard, Kirkby Lonsdale, Westmorland Walter Davidson (There are several Walter Davidson listed with the CWGC but none show any connection with Kirkby Lonsdale and surrounds). Chief Officer Stewart FORBES, Merchant Navy of S.S. Oakcrest (London) died at sea on the 22nd November 1940 aged 54. On the 28th February 1922 he returned back to England from New York and docked at Liverpool. He was aged 36, a Master Mariner and gave his home address as 29, New Road, Kirkby Lonsdale. He was native of West Kirby. He was the husband of Ellen of Kirkby Lonsdale. He is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London Pilot Officer 165549 Peter Dennison METCALFE Royal Air Force (VR) died 4th October 1944. He was the son of George Henry and Edith of Lancaster. He is at rest in Royal Oak Burial Park, Victoria, British Columbia Sergeant 1984230 Arthur MAJOR, 994 Dock Operating Coy, Royal Engineers died 17th June 1943 aged 39. He was the son of George Thomas and Charlotte Branson and husband of Phoebe Eleanor of Hull. He is commemorated on the Brookwood Memorial, Surrey Gunner 984235 George PROCTOR, 122nd Field Regiment, Royal Artillery died 18th august 1943 aged 27. He was the son Edward and Edith Annie of Kirkby Lonsdale. He was the son of Arthur James and Gertrude Sarah of Kirkby Lonsdale. He was the son of Leo and Marie of Kirkby Lonsdale. He is at rest in Uden War cemetery, Noord-Brabant, Netherlands Fusilier 6922003 William VIPONT, 2nd Northumberland Fusiliers died 15th March 1944 aged 20.
