Can you help?

In 2016, WMT gave a grant towards this war memorial. As it has been a number of years since the grant was given, we would like an up-to-date condition survey and photographs to be added to this war memorial record. Can you help?

Status: On original site
Type: Freestanding
Location: External
Setting: Within a garden/park/churchyard/enclosure/Marketplace
Description: Wheel cross
Materials:
  • Stone Granite
Lettering: Leaded
Conflicts:
  • First World War (1914-1918)
About the memorial: The memorial is in the form of a Runic Cross, made of Cornish granite, standing 13feet high, and measures across thebase 5 feet by 4 feet, the whole being of rusticated finish. Carved in relief on the front is a Crusader’s sword. The inscriptions are engraved on finely axed panels. The one on the shaft of the cross reads, “1914-They died that we might live-1918”; on the second base is “Greater love hath no man than this.” The engraving and erection of the memorial was originally carried out by an ex-Service man, Mr. Edward Cope, of Riddings. Over the years the company has passed through the family and is now owned by the great grandson of the original constructor Alex Cope. The foundation, which measures 8 feet by 7 feet 6 inches, was been laid by the Butterley Company; also the paving from the gateway to the monument. The War Memorial was restored during July 2016.
