Comments:
I am the parish clerk and Great Ness and Little Ness PC are responsible for this Grade II listed memorial, which comprises the memorial and 2 stone walls around it - a smaller sandstone wall around the memorial itself and a larger retaining wall and steps with capping and railings; these form part of the listed structure. A condition survey carried out in September 2023 identified extensive issues with the pointing and evidence of moisture penetration and cracking in the stonework, which in some areas is quite extensive. The walls have also been pointed in the wrong mortar historically, sand and cement as opposed to lime mortar, The capping on the retaining wall has no overhang which means moister is penetrating the wall as it runs off down the face of it. Advice has been taken from the local conservation officer who agreed repairs are needed and suggested we take advice from specialist contractors which we have done.
