Comments:
In the case of this memorial, whilst accepting that there is some discolouration owing to organic growth on the stone surface, and recognising that this does slightly compromise the legibility of the inscription, cleaning of the stone is not suggested at this time. Even minimal cleaning with water and natural bristle brushes can only be carried out a finite number of times without compromising the surface of the stone and in this instance, given the shaded environment and surrounding foliage, the stone surface seems likely to be recolonised by lichens, making any ‘cleaner’ an appearance short term.
