Comments:
St Mary's Church, Whitechapel, was firebombed on 29 December 1940. That huge church opposite the Whitechapel Art Gallery lay in ruins until 1952. When the site was cleared, It was then (1952) that The Bishopsgate Institute offered to take the memorial . It is securely fastened to a wall in The Institute's Reference Library, but the Library is no longer open to the public (staff issues/funding?). It is in the same place today and in much the same condition as shown in a 2010 photo on wmo. . It clearly could do with a thorough clean though the embossed lettering of the names can be clearly read. I doubt if the Institute could reasonably be expected to fund any maintenance. New photos will be posted by WMT.
