Comments:
Have had a quick look. The feet on the southish side have been replaced in the distance past these are approx 6 x 6 green oak. The northish side also needs replacing as the oak has shrunk back & the retaining bolts are not retaining, in the short term these bolts could be loosened off repacked with a steel plate & bolted back down owing to the weight of the whole structure it seems quite stable & repacking the bolts would help. The shingles on the approach side from the carpark also look a bit suspect. The lead work was replaced about 4 to 5 years ago with some guys from my college as the original lead was nicked. How far do you what to go with this as owing to the steep angle of the ground any major repairs will cost the earth I have taken some snaps of the problems see below, as this is of significant historical value & its location. I think a proper restoration is required or we just make sure that the retaining bolts are secure. Retaining bolt proud and foot support weakened by rot. This is common to all four corners. Although this looks bad the gates shut properly which shows that there is no significant shift in the structure. In conclusion as in previous email the retaining bolts could be reworked, the roof shingles should be replaced but as previous repairs to the southish side have almost failed & the northish side are on their way I would recommend that the base timbers are replaced & the uprights mortised into these owing to the significant weight & the need for retaining as much of the structure as possible I would recommend that it was dismantled & then rebuilt. I assume that it would come under “listed” control, maybe someone like the Open Air Museum at Singleton could help as they have significant expertise in the area.
