Comments:
This war memorial received a grant from War Memorials Trust in 2018 after it was determined that the structural integrity of what remained of this war memorial was compromised by decaying timber and posed a risk to the public. In consultation with War Memorials Trust, Watford St Michael and All Angels Church, decided that the memorial should be reconstructed from new timber to exactly match the design of the original cross and lettering. Remaining fabric, historic images of the memorial, and a few traces of the original lettering informed the design of the memorial and a record of the Fallen kept within the church provided a record of the names which were incised onto the memorial as closely to the original design as possible. Originally the cross carried a small mounted crucifix which it seems was later replaced with a purpose-designed lead figure of Christ. It is not known when exactly this was removed, in part because the fixtures and failed and in part for safe-keeping, however the lead figure remains in the inventory of St Michael and All Angels Church. The images also showed a canopy over the Christ figure was at some point a part of the memorial’s design. Works were completed early in 2018.
