Comments:
The overall condition of the memorial is structurally sound and it retains its commemorative function. However, a number of conservation issues have been identified which, if left untreated, may compromise the long-term stability and legibility of the memorial. Stonework The shaft and cross are generally in good condition with no immediate signs of major structural instability. The base and plinth show areas of mortar loss and failed joints, allowing water ingress. This poses a medium-term risk of accelerated decay. Localised biological growth (moss and lichens) is present on the base and lower courses. Mortar Joints The pointing across the base is in a deteriorated state, with widespread mortar failure. Significant repointing is required; an initial estimate suggests around 50% of joints will need attention, subject to detailed inspection at the start of works. Use of hard mortar in previous repairs is evident in places, which may exacerbate stone decay if not addressed. Inscriptions The inscriptions remain legible but weathered and the lead has smeared across the stonework. Several lead letters are missing, and some existing letters have lost their painted finish. Without intervention, ongoing weathering will result in further loss of detail and legibility. Vegetation Encroaching vegetation is present around the railings and immediate setting of the memorial. There is a risk of root growth affecting the stonework foundations if not fully removed. Summary of Condition The memorial is currently in a stable but deteriorating condition. The key risks are: Loss of mortar joints, leading to increased water ingress and potential long-term stone damage. Loss of legibility in inscriptions due to missing lead letters and fading paint. Obscuring of inscriptions by moss and lichen. Vegetation encroachment around the setting. The memorial requires conservation-led intervention to stabilise its condition, prevent further deterioration, and preserve its commemorative function.
