Comments:
This memorial comprises a wooden cross on a stone quartered base with a square plaque in front of it. The wooden cross and its four curved wooden supports onto the base is in good condition. The wood shows no outward sign of rot or serious damage and is stable. and securely attached to the stone base. However the wording on the four stone flanks of the base is partially illegible. It should, I think, read " IS IT NOTHING TO YOU ALL YE THAT PASS BY?" This is no longer fully clear.( I have seen such wording on another memorial). A grant was given from War Memorials Trust in 2015, in part, to clean and restore the wording on the flat stone in front of the memorial. Photos on warmemorials online show before and after condition (2014/2015). Sadly the condition is now worse than it was in 2014. The wording is about 50% illegible - this may be because of a lack of cleaning or deterioration. From the 2015 after restoration photo the wording should read "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/AND IN GRATEFUL/REMEMBRANCE OF/THOSE FROM CHELSHAM/WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES /IN WAR" .Much of this wording is no longer legible. The two plaques with names of World War One and World War Two dead are positioned close to the memorial on the church wall either side of the church entrance porch. . The plaques have incised names but the letters of the names are not painted. Though the incising (done in 2015) and state of the plaques is good it is stlll not easy to read the names without standing quite close to the plaques. My condition report of "Poor" arises solely from the state of the lettering on the base of the cross and on the stone in front of it. I am sending photos to War Memorials Trust. Anthony Bradbury
