Comments:
Our War Memorial was renovated in 2016/17 in a project led by a team of people from the Portskerra and Melvich community. Initially we sought funding from the War Memorial Trust but we found them very prescriptive and bureaucratic so successfully sought funding locally. The inscriptions were repainted and repairs made to the monument including repairs and repainting of the surrounding iron railings and the provision of additional hard-standing for services held at the memorial . We also improved access from the west end of the site with a graded footpath, small car park and handrails. The memorial was built circa 1920 by John Hood of Wick, Caithness and his name can be seen inscribed at the bottom of the plinth. The same firm carried out the recent renovations. Reinstatement of the lighting is awaited. A re-dedication service is to be held in September 2107. We lack any detail about the building of the memorial but know it was funded by local subscriptions. We are trying to find out more to ensure the history of the monument is known and preserved perhaps by updates to this site.
