Comments:
The lower half of the brass plaque appears dirtier than shown in the 2016 photo. The top left insignia depicts a flag with the Union flag occupying the top left corner (otherwise plain). Top centre depicts a kaka bird sitting inside a wreath of kowhai leaves (the insignia of the 4th (Waikato) Squadron Aukland Mounted Rifles). The top right depicts the flag of New Zealand in reverse. The outlines and detail of the flags and the regimental motto across the top ("LIBERTAS ET NATALE SOLUM") are in relief. It appears that the infill to these was originally perhaps enamel or some sort of (possibly coloured) fabric, which has dried, shrunk and cracked with age. The main inscription remains legible.
