Comments:
This memorial is on a building in a poor state of repair the guttering above it is leaking causing deterioration to the memorial. The war memorial itself requires: Cleaning the sandstone tablet to remove soiling with a non-metallic bristle brush and clean water; Clean lead lettering and application of patination oil; Replacement of mortar weathering fillet; The copper staining from the bronze bolts which has penetrated the porous stone can be difficult to remove. It is possible to remove the staining using repeated application of poultices composed of ammonium chloride and ammonia, mixed with paper pulp and Fuller’s earth. This would need to be carried out by an experienced contractor. The domed bolts heads should be cleaned and microcrystalline wax applied to provide protection.
