Comments:
The original gild oak plaque seems to be in good condition, although removal of the Perspex screen would be necessary to know for sure. The main issue with this work, is that the decorative/protective surround has been made from Mahogany, and doesn’t really appear to have been given sufficient weatherproofing. Mahogany is a very poor choice, as it’s open grained, and reacts to moisture readily. The skirting and cornice mitred joints have all swelled and opened up to create gaps that are 1cm wide, and over. The mahogany surround is covered in biological material. The Perspex appears to be full of condensation on occasion, and if the original oak plaque is exposed to moisture, this could be very detrimental to both the substrate oak, and the gilding.
