War Memorials Trust recognises that there are issues with the condition of the memorial such as the eroded Christ figure and raised lettering. The Christ figure can still be discerned and therefore it would not be desirable to replace this at this time as it would result in significant loss of historic fabric. With regards to raised lettering this is particularly difficult to address especially given the level of deterioration in this case. There is also a crack to the base stone of the memorial which is consistent with some settlement movement to the memorial which can be seen with other structures within the churchyard. This is often the case in churchyards and is not necessarily a problem if the memorial has settled and movement is not ongoing. This should be monitored over time to determine the stability and if it is shown that movement is ongoing them this can be appropriately addressed with the guidance of a qualified conservation professional such as an architect or structural engineer.
