Comments:
The Lych-Gate is approaching 100 years old as it was built in 1920. The only known repair was done in 1991 when the shingle roof was replaced. The original oak timber structure is now rotten in many key places and it is deemed unstable through the passing of time rather than any accidental or malicious damage. The structural engineer appointed feels that once the oak structure/roofing is renovated/replaced, the South Wall which is leaning significantly, will fall down. A detailed specification of work has been created by the Church Architect and a War Memorial Trust Grant will be sought to help fund the work. The Lych-Gate has now been taken out of use until the work has been completed. The Lych-Gate is the main entrance to the Church and in the meantime, parishioners and attendees of christenings/weddings/funerals will have to approach the Church through the Car Park to the side of the Church. See photos attached above for condition images. Entry by Lee Stevens on behalf of Plumpton Parish Council.
