Comments:
Archaeology Scotland surveyed the remains of this monument in 2016/17 to assess the extent of the remaining features. It was recorded that the three base tiers were still extant and that most of the upstanding (mortared) cairn had been demolished to the level of three layers of bonded stones. We were informed that the stones had been sourced from the nearby river which explained their roundedness and they had been bonded with lime mortar. The prisoners from Stobs Camp had been given permission to erect the monument in 1917 which bore the inscription 'To our comrades who died far from home' in German. It is believed it was demolished at the time of the removal of the burials to Cannock Chase. Much of the stone from the monument remains in a scatter about the base. It is intention of Stobs Camp Project to reinstate the memorial during 2018.
