Comments:
In 2022 this memorial received a War Memorials Trust grant of £1,690 from Grants for War Memorials scheme supported by Historic England. The memorial’s tapering shaft and cross had cracked. This appears to have occurred as a result of water ingress corroding the internal ferrous metal dowel (which holds the component parts together and upright). The expansion and contraction through freezing and thawing of water within the structure will eventually crack the stone. In line with best conservation practice, War Memorials Trust supports the maximum retention of fabric. In this instance the nature of the structural damage to the stonework meant that the amount of original fabric from the cross which could be saved and pinned-together was limited however, as a condition of the grant, the undamaged carving of a pelican from the centre of the cross was carefully cut-out and incorporated into a newly carved cross constructed from limestone to match the original design of the memorial. The construction joints were all pointed using a lime mortar.
