Comments:
In the canal- In 1967 the Rowing Club building was repaired . The war memorial was in a ruinous state, with the four corner pillars broken off and the central column flaking. Offering was made by the Peak Forest Canal Society to repair and maintain the memorial, but the church decided to have it removed. The bottle with the names was found and returned to the church. It was broken and the paper was much affected by damp, but still legible. The stone tablets were locked in the boiler room in the lower storey of the building. The building was later burned by vandals and is believed that was when the stones ended up into the canal.
