Comments:
Hospital Services gradually moved to the new West Cumberland Hospital at Hensingham from the mid 1960's. On completion of that exercise the War Memorial function ceased. The building, after a period of decay, was later converted to flats. The building and Castle Park (where the Cenotaph- WMO/164097) is situated were gifted anonymously to the town (now known to be William Walker of the Tannery). It was originally the Whitehaven house of the well known Lowther family.
