THE NEW HALL ALSO WAS GRIEVOUSLY DAMAGED ” (ST. MATTHEW’S, WIMBLEDON BY MARJORIE H. COLE. 1983) AT THE SAME TIME THE WOODEN WAR MEMORIAL OF THE 1914-1918 WAR, WHICH INCLUDED A CRUCIFIX WITH A FIGURE OF CHRIST AND, BELOW, A BOARD BEARING NAMES OF THE FALLEN, WAS DESTROYED. THE MEMORIAL STOOD IN THE GROUNDS TO THE EAST OF THE CHURCH BUT THE FIGURE, WHICH SURVIVED, IS NOW ON THE FRONT OF THE CHURCH HALL. THE NEW CHURCH , DESIGNED BY SEBASTIAN COMPER, F.R.I.B.A., WAS DEDICATED ON THE FEAST OF ST. NICHOLAS, 6TH DECEMBER, 1958 BY THE BISHOP OF KINGSTON.
