Comments:
WMT has reviewed the recent condition report and would assess the memorial as being in Fair condition based on the 2015 images. While there is some discolouration to the stonework, it is not impacting legibility and does not appear to be causing negative chemical action to the stonework. WMT believes that stonework should be cleaned when deposits are impacting the inscriptions or damaging the stone. Given its location and the nearby trees, biological growth is to be expected and would likely colonise after any cleaning. Also see Chapter 12 of Historic England's guidance which details scenarios where cleaning is acceptable, https://historicengland.org.uk/images-books/publications/conservation-repair-management-war-memorials/.
