Comments:
The memorial sits high on the hill overlooking all of Saddleworth so is exposed to much wind and bad weather. It was built with this in mind, of millstone grit, which withstands the conditions well. It is black due to industrial pollution in years gone by but it's important to note that whilst unsightly, the pollution adds a layer of protection and the fact the black remains shows how little the stone is weathering. If this were sandblasted or cleaned, it would damage the stone and weaken it. The plaques are metal and are largely undamaged, they could do with cleaning and maybe recoating somehow but it's important to note up here they will be subject to harsh weather. Whilst it's not perfect and some names are hard to read, I feel previous reviews that the memorial is in poor condition are harsh, it's in an exposed location and really considering it's lasting well and there's no obvious remedial work at the moment that would help other than some work on the metal plaques.
