About the memorial: The memorial is a wooden board with ornate decoration divided into three sections - there were three memorials exactly the same commissioned by the W.T. Henley's for each of their separate works - one in Gravesend, one in Woolwich and one in Barrow-in-Furnace. The memorial list the names of all the employees of the company who died during WW1. These names are shown in chronological years starting in 1914 and ending 1918. The memorial was removed from the factory in Gravesend where it was originally placed in the canteen. It was subsequently moved into old disused WW2 air-raid tunnels that were carved out of the chalk cliffs that surrounded the factory site. I wrote to the company looking to find the memorial and during several visits along with staff members we located the memorial in the disused tunnels and rescued it. The company gave the memorial to my safe keeping and I arranged for Gravesham Borough Council to store it until a suitable site could be located to return the memorial to. It is still in storage but the old factory site is now being developed and I will approach the developer to see if we can place the memorial on the site.
